Elections Origin Story: Derek Bowens
Meet the Director of Elections for Durham County, North Carolina
Derek Bowens, Director of Elections, Durham County, North Carolina
When and how did you get started in elections?
It all started with the presidential election in 2004 (Kerry vs. Bush). Although I was not yet eligible to vote (I was in 10th grade), I remember being incredibly impassioned about the outcome of that election.
My experience with this election was pivotal in deciding to go to college for a degree in political science. I intended on immediately jumping into some form of public service following graduation. In my search for work in the public sector following graduation, I came across a job posting for an Elections Specialist with the New Hanover County Board of Elections. My immediate thought was, "This can't be a full-time job!" I applied, got the job with the primary responsibility of auditing campaign finance reports, and fell in complete love with the industry. Elections became my synonym for public service. I have been in elections administration since 2012 and have been quite fulfilled professionally ever since.
If you were not working in Election Administration, what do you think you would be doing?
If I was not working in elections, I would likely be working on Capitol Hill as a lobbyist or managing someone's political campaign.
What is your favorite hobby?
I am a huge movie buff and supreme foodie. Since I cannot give either one of these a clear edge, I would have to say watching movies and trying new food.
Who is your favorite superhero and why?
I am not sure that I have a favorite superhero. One individual that has inspired me greatly as a professional is Tiger Woods. The time he put into perfecting his craft is unmatched. I believe he has taught a masterclass to the world on how to be excellent in what you do.
